The technology is changing the world’s first head transplant tradition of treatment and lifestyle. This time Italian neurosurgeon Dr. Sergio Canavero wants to carry out.
The announcement of first head transplant comes last year and scheduled to take place in December 2017 has been delayed. Still, yet there is no definitive date for the transplant but it is expected in the first quarter of next year.
The first patient to receive head transplant:
- The Russian volunteer namely Valery Spridonov announces to become the first patient for head transplant surgery. He is suffering from the rare muscle-wasting disease and a Russian tech scientist.
- The volunteer is working with the doctors for two years to find a feasible solution towards his problem.
- Canavero pointed out that Valery couldn’t receive a donor body in China due to biological and ethical reasons.
- But Valery recently admitted that he wouldn’t undergo the procedure because doctors don’t promise him about his wishes. He wished to walk again, have a normal life and would even survive after surgery.
- The volunteer is now taking an alternative measurement to improve his health. There is quite well surgery with steel implant to support the spine in a straight position.
- The volunteer will now look for the alternative to improve life instead of relying on experimental procedure.
Dr. Sergio Canavero comments over world’s first head transplant:
He told that technology and team are ready to perform the first head transplant, waiting for funding and ethical approval. Dr. believed that patient will able to walk again within a year after extraordinary surgery.
He added that ‘his first patient for the surgery is Chinese instead of previously suggested Russian volunteer’. The Chinese team had already performed a successful operation on human cadavers to hone the technology.
Dr. Sergio added that he will be working with the Chinese doctors and with his colleague Dr. Xiaoping. China is always criticized for his scientific methods but Dr. Sergio believes that outcome of surgery will positive.
Operation proceedings:
- The doctor added that the surgery is at extreme risk but we believe that operation remains successful.
- Cooling both donor and recipient down to 12 degrees Celsius so that cells do not die of oxygen starvation.
- Once the head is connected then patient remains in a coma for several weeks. So that tissues around the neck will link blood vessels through tiny tubes.
- When the patient will return from the comma, eligible to speak and move immediately and following intensive physiotherapy.
- A risk is the part of life but risks cannot be contained in this surgery. He added his colleague Xiaoping already carried out a successful head transplant on a monkey in January.
Dr. Sergio Canavero publications:
- His recent publications claimed that we have reconnected 9 the spinal cords of 9 mice as a proof-of-concept for surgery.
- These spinal cords are attached with the special solution called Polythene Glycol. He believes that this solution will also work for human beings while performing world’s first head transplant surgery.
- Sergio is determined to perform the operation despite criticism from other scientists.
