Facebook has filed a patent application that can detect a social status of person automatically. This system will categorize everyone into three categories. These categories are upper class, middle class, and working class. It is just unbelievable that system will recognize person’s status.
The social media giant will predict the status of person depending on a number of things. It includes user’s personal data such as education, homeownership and internet usage. These all things matter even internet usage to predict the status of a person.
This patent was originally filed on July 27, 2016, but this time it becomes public. Actually, this patent has a lot of purposes to make it public. One of the benefits of this patent is an advertisement. It helps Facebook’s targeting capabilities and serves more relevant advertisement to the public.
“By predicting the socio-economic groups of users, [FB] is able to help the third party present sponsored content to the target users,” the patent read.
Well, third parties are able to target specific users. It will also help to target specific users and enhance user experience on a newsfeed.

The decision of person’s status depends on plenty of things. A decision tree will conduct exact answer after asking various questions from a person. It includes:
- How many internet devices you own?
- Whether is this your own home or not?
- What is your highest level of education?
Patent system will pretty intelligent and also differs with an age of a person. For instance, ages between 20-30 will ask for how many internet devices they own? But when it comes towards 30-40, it will ask whether you own home or not?
At the end, an algorithm will decide the probability of person whether he/she is poor or rich. It will calculate in which category they will belong? A Fb user will never share information about their income as no social media knows about it. Instead of asking income, a patent will ask for questions to calculate a probability of person.
Facebook has already received a lot of controversies over collecting user’s personal information. It already knows a lot of things and algorithm also uses travel destinations. But an owner of social media make sure, this information is used only for advertisement purposes. It will improve user engagement as well as help third parties
