What pair of shoes and purse will go with my abaya?
1. We don’t change very often
No matter where we are going, we can choose to wear anything we want underneath. Pajamas are only the “most decent” pieces of clothing we wear.
2. We have all kinds of abayas: casual, semi-formal, and formals
Our wardrobes are full of abayas and we have all kinds of them. We sort our abayas according to the events and places we wear them to. Casual abayas are for going to the market, semi-formals for the mall, and formals for weddings.
3. We buy matching shoes and purses to go with our abayas
Wearing an abaya doesn’t save us money. We always buy matching shoes and purses for every abaya we buy.
4. We buy most of our abayas from Dubai or Saudi
We wear all imported stuff. If our ‘stock’ of abayas is getting too old, we either fly to Dubai to buy more of them, ask some relative to send them or look for some local vendor who imports abayas from Dubai.
5. We go gaga over designer abayas with designer signatures
A designer abaya with the designer label means the world to us. And we make sure that signature doesn’t get hidden underneath the layers.
6. We can do all kinds of things in our abaya
Horse riding, swimming, skating… you think!
7. We use our abaya as a shield against those “stares”
We avoid unneeded attention by covering ourselves. The more crowded the place is, the more we cover ourselves.
8. We don’t need to lose weight
You have no idea how fat a woman in an abaya might be.
9 We often trip when moving up stairs
The only time we question our decision is when going up stairs with a long abaya.
10. We never need a rain coat
We can go out in heavy rain and still not get soaked because the material doesn’t soak up water easily.
11. We don’t need to buy warm clothes in winter
Our abaya retains heat in the cold months so we don’t need to buy warm clothes in the winter.
